I think our former head coach placed a high value on game experience, which partially explains the initial decision.  However, after watching the offense struggle mightily in October (no touchdowns in 7 quarters against Missouri and Okie State, then no touchdowns in nearly 60 minutes of action against A&M and Texas), failure to even try a change is more inexplicable.
