Ran a quick count of the yards gained/lost on each play and here's what I found.
WMU and the Huskers each had 28 plays of 4 or more yards.
WMU had 8 plays with negative yardage, Huskers had 7.
Biggest difference (besides the costly penalties) was that the Huskers had 10 plays of 15 or more yards, and WMU only had 7.
Here is a breakdown (I included plays that had penalties as if the penalties didn't happen)
Negative yard plays
WMU 8
Huskers 7
0-3 yard plays
WMU 39
Huskers 35
4-14 yard plays
WMU 21
Huskers 18
15 or more yard plays
WMU 7
Huskers 10
Of note...last year against Nevada, Huskers had 55 plays of 4 or more yards to Nevada's 17.
Last year against Ball St, Huskers had 37 plays of 4 or more yards to Ball State's 39. Also, Ball State had 17 plays of 14 or more yards. (Huskers had 13)
Is there any meaning that can be assigned to these numbers, or are these just worthless statistics? I kind of think that it means this game was closer than the score indicated.
