[Husker] my thoughts (pretty long)

3) Despite getting 4-sacks versus the 13 we had all year last year (I still
can't believe we only had 13), I really thought their QB had a lot of time
to throw and we didn't get sufficient pressure on the QB, even when we
blitzed.

Skylar, The point I was trying to make from the statement above is that the
D is playing smear the guy with the ball. Instead of playing touch football.
Like from last year.

I was at the game and here's the good and bad from my mind:

GOOD:

1) Although he was out of position on a couple plays (to be expected in your
first ever game at linebacker) Cody Glenn looks the part. He's probably one
of the top 3 or 4 fastest guys on the defense, CLEARLY faster than Dillard
or Wortman. He ran down the speedy RB a couple times and caught some
receivers in time to breakup the pass. I was blown away by his speed
though.

2) Dillard has always been great in the run, but he does seem to have more
mobility this year and should be able to help out in the passing game.

3) The defense overall played good for 90% of the game. We had a couple
rough breakdowns guarding the tight end and a crossing running back or two,
but overall very much improved.

4) Prince, Hagg (pronounced Hayg I believe) and West all looked very solid.
Hagg had a great breakup in the endzone where the receiver had caught the
ball, but Hagg knocked it out. Another play Prince looked clearly beat by 2
steps and as soon as the QB threw it I said, "Crap, touchdown". But Prince
kicked it in to gear and made a great vertical leap and just deflected it
enough to prevent the TD. Also, Murillo and Ricky Thenarse were both
injured and should add to the secondary.

5) The DLine was GREAT against the run...(more on the pass later).

6) Henery Kicked 4 44yarders. All of them looked smooth like he was kicking
and extra point. Incredible recovery on a bad snap by Wesch on the first
one. Last year we had ONE attempt over 40 yards (Adi Kunalic, first game)
and would either go for it on 4th down every play or punt from the freakin
30. I'm going to use all caps for emphasis, IT WAS SO FREAKING ACTUALLY
ATTEMPTING THE KICK FROM 40+. Sorry, had to say it. Henery is now 12-12 in
his Husker career and 51-51 career xtra points. That's incredible, even if
your coach wouldn't let you attempt anything longer than a chipshot.

7) Prince looks great in the return game, so did Cuerenski Guillen (sp?).

8) What did they have, 9 yards rushing? I know WMU isn't the 1995 Huskers,
but 9 yards rushing against ANYONE is good.

9) Great day for Swift, he seemed to always be open at the right time.
Menelik Holt had one drop, but everywhere else looked solid. There was a
couple times where Niles Paul looked like he had a little dear in the
headlights, but I think he'll be good in the long run.

10) The Dreu Young catch over two defenders was fantastic. I don't know if
I'll go as far as Shawn Watson to say it's one of the best I've ever seen,
but a great catch for a tight-end none the less.

BAD

1) Offensive line seemed to have trouble pushing WMU back. Running backs
were dealing with a lot of defenders in the backfield. Part of that could
be WMU stacking the box, which they certainly did. Good thing we have an OC
who was willing to adjust and throw the ball all over their DBs on an
island.

2) The first interception from Ganz I can live with. It was a VERY slightly
overthrown ball that the receiver got his hands on, but skipped into the DBs
hands instead. The second one was just plain bad. He tried to throw it
through the linebacker to a guy that was blanket covered anyway.

3) Despite getting 4-sacks versus the 13 we had all year last year (I still
can't believe we only had 13), I really thought their QB had a lot of time
to throw and we didn't get sufficient pressure on the QB, even when we
blitzed.

4) There were about a handful of secondary coverage breakdowns where we
completely lost the guy we're supposed to be covering.

5) Dan Tinchner had 1 bad punt and 1 good one. Not sure if it's a bad, but
he was so dang dependable last year.

Sorry, I'm long winded...

OK, so I was not able to watch the game, just listened to in over
huskers.com

Concerns ? Certainly. NU needs to be able to run more, I really expected to
see 250 yards rushing. Maybe WMU was stacking the line, I do not know. The D
made some stupid mistakes (penalties, etc) but that can be coached. I would
like to have seen another QB get in the game.

There is a lot to be happy about. The D made a statement. Many wondered if
Cody Glen was truly that good. I think he is. Joe Ganz sounded great. He is
a leader.

Usually the biggest improvement in a team is from game 1 to 2. That makes me
feel really good.
