[Husker] Team Speed on Defense

I agree on all points and I'd like to add (or maybe re-emphasize) that a
defense that is mentally 'lost' will always appear slower than they actually
are. If I tell you, get the fullback, you're going to pop off that line and
go get him and look as fast as you can run. However, if I give you 5
different situations to react to, and the final is you covering the
fullback, the fullback is going to run right by you and make you look slow.

Good post!

It's often said that you can't coach speed, and that has been cited as a
reason for limited expectations for improvement in the defense this year.

Perhaps you can't coach speed, but you sure can coach "slow." Many of the
players have lost 10 or more pounds from last year, and they are faster as a
result. Also, Cosgrove's schemes emphasizing reading and reacting (after the
play has passed you by) have been replaced with a full-speed, attacking
style.

The announcers made many remarks about the speed of the Husker defense,
particularly citing the weight losses as a factor. They certainly looked a
lot faster to me at getting to the ball in this game than at any time last
year.
