My older brother is a coach at Nebraskan Wesleyan and when asked at the beginning of the year, he felt that Nebraska was capable of winning 8 or 9 games this season. I have not yet heard if he has changed that prediction or not.
That being said, while it is obvious that Coach Pelini doesn't have the talent that he would have recruited; there some talent on this team. I was little surprised that Nebraska wasn't more aggressive going after Chase Daniels. Early in the game, Nebraska was pressuring Daniels and caused disruption of several of his throws. Late in the game, Nebraska got away from it, and Daniels had a ton of time to throw and, well, we all saw the result. On a positive, note, Chase Daniels did not scramble for first downs, as he did last year.
Offensively, Nebraska relied on the run too much. They could not afford to go three and out, and when it was obvious that the running game was not working, then they should have went to the short throwing game. This would have loosened up the Missouri defense and allowed for more production. I don't know why an offense doesn't go the two minute offense to get the opposing teams defense on their heels. I though that had Nebraska went to a no huddle last week, they would have won. And Missouri's weakness this season is their defense. Speeding up the game, would have made Missouri's defense react to Nebraska and not allow them to dictate the flow of the game.
Another thing that has troubled me for some time (since the Frank Solich era) is that Nebraska has recruited speed and the expense of size. It used to be that Nebraska was the biggest, fastest, and most powerful team on the field. Now, Nebraska looks smaller than most of their opponents (on both sides of the ball). I believe that Nebraska needs to find the balance of speed and size that it once had.
And finally, while it was overcast yesterday in Chandler Arizona, this morning there are clear blue skies and the sun is shining brightly (now if only Jimmie Johnson and the Green Bay Packers can win, the weekend won't be a total loss!). Also, what ever happened to, "We'll all stick together in kinds of weather for dear old Nebraska U!"??????
