A deep bomb play is IMHO quite a bit different from an automatic to
an uncovered receiver. That particular play was an error by the defense,
and I would hope they learned something from it.
When Mackovica took a knee at the Miami 2 in the Fiesta Bowl, the
reaction I heard from some coaches was that Nebraska would have
been kinder to just run him into the line another time, even if he
had scored.
The story about Osborne sending word to the other coach that all
remaining plays would be up the middle is never attributed to
a particular game. (It obviously wasn't the '95 ASU game.)
Devaney used to tell that story at the dinner table, and would
end it with "And the ball boy scored on a 50 yard run."
