If I recall Bobby Newcombe threw the pass in the trick play. At the time I thought Solich wanted to give Bobby one last chance to shine in the bowl game after Eric Crouch beat him out for the quarterback job earlier in his career. I was glad Bobby made the play.

I find it hard to say a coach is RUTS with ONE play. IIRC, Solich called 1 pass
play in the second half. How is that RUTS ?
If a defense doesn't like someone scoring on them, then they should stop
the O.

That's a matter of opinion, and I disagree with it. Running a trick play
with a five-touchdown lead late in the third quarter is RUTS in any
game. I thought it was wrong at the time, and nothing I've seen here or
elsewhere has changed my opinion.
