There are those who will argue that there is no such thing as RUTS, period.
(I'm not one of them, though.)
For the most part you don't hear coaches complaining about it, just fans.
(Most coaches will say, at least publicly, that it's THEIR job to keep
the other team from scoring, not the other team's job.)
The example Husker fans may remember is the Arizona State game from
1995. Late in the game, up very comfortably, the Huskers scored a
touchdown on a pass play. The receiver lined up without a cover man
on him, the play was an automatic between the receiver and the QB, and
it worked to perfection. The players did EXACTLY as they were coached
to do, it's hard to fault them for following their training.
The other team's coach was not amused, but as people may recall he got
his revenge (of sorts) a year later in the Debacle in the Desert.
I thought Ohio State scored unnecessarily on Northwestern late in
the game this year, but IMHO Ohio State has a history of late meaningless
scores in Big 10 games dating back to the 60's when I was a student
there, which is why I have never rooted for them in any game, and
probably never will. (If they play USC, I root for an earthquake.)
I also don't care what people say, I think margin of victory still
affects both the human polls and the computer polls.
