In my mind there is no such thing as running up the score - EVER!
I am lining up my 11 guys against your 11 guys and if you can't stop me that's too bad. Figure out a way to keep my team out of the end zone or a way to score more points - it's as simple as that. Further, every play by nature is a "trick" play - you are trying to create a mismatch that results in greater opportunity for your team to score. You are trying to "trick" your opponent on every snap of the ball.
Running up the score is a concept advanced by typically outmanned programs as a means of drumming up sympathy. If you don't want to get beat by 50, 60 or 70 points than work harder to get better or in the case of non-conference opponents, don't take the contract and the big payouts in the first place.
Imagine if this running up the score concept applied in the real world to see how ridiculous it becomes. I run a business and my goal as a businessman is to take every single possible contract away from my chief competitor and drive him out of business. After taking several deals in a row from my competitor, would I ever consider taking my foot off the gas or putting forth less than my organization's best effort in order to let my competitor catch up or feel good about his organization? NEVER. You keep the throttle down 100% of the time and win as big and as often as you can because you never know when the pendulum is going to swing the other way.
I will say however that when you do win that you should act like you have won before and not gloat, taunt or rub the fact that you are so demonstrably better than your opponent in their collective faces. That is never acceptable.
Just my take.
Go Big Red!!
