Mike,
There is no such thing as RUTS in a bowl game, nor in a national title
game. Both teams are chosen by the bowl and the bowls are set up so
that similar teams face each other off at the end of the season. The
idea is that teams in the bowls should have improved over the season
and any team in a bowl game should be playing at the peak of their
ability. I know that's not what happens because of the emotions that
go into bowl games, but that's the perfect idea.
So, if anyone has sour grapes about RUTS.... it goes back to competing
on the field. Northwestern fans should be more upset that their
coaches did not sufficiently prepare them for the game at hand.
Call it bad karma all you want, but crushing Northwestern had nothing
to do with what happened later. We did that all on our own.
