[Husker] Some interesting stats to chew on

Great stats Skylar,
The supposed lack of improvement in defense was one of my biggest disappointments (along with the ball hawking that you and Laura were discussing). I had felt that we might get to #40 on D or so, but we have stagnated at #81. Now with your stats, I feel we may have actually gotten to being an above average defense, but we play in a conference where even excellent defenses allow 300 yard passing games due to offensive efficiencies. If we hold virtually every competitor to their average offensive stats, that would imply we have an average offense. But since we have held 8 of 10 offenses to lower than their average, we must have an above average defense (or is this just rationalization?). Since #55 is average nationally, we must surely be #40 or close!?!?!?!
OK, I know -- I'm trying too hard. [g]
Still, not to bad for a D with no starting LB's (remaining) and safeties who supposedly don't play well.

I absolutely agree. In fact, if I was forced to pick one stat we'd improve
in, I thought for sure it would be takeaways. We've been in position SOOO
many times this year to get a takeaway only to have the ball go right
through the DBs hands or the offensive player jump on the ball. I have no
stats for this, but it feels like there have been more opportunities, but we
haven't been able to capitalize.
It's probably also why we're 6-4 and not 8-2 (or penalties).
That being said. I think most of us would have taken a 7-5 / 8-4 type of
season looking forward at the end of last year. I don't think the Big XII
North is as competitive as last year, but in my mind we're vastly improved.
Unfortunately we're still in a pretty big hole.
GBR!

Skylar,
The one stat that I was hoping would do a turn around that didn't happen
is probably the most telling one that you list in "Other" -- Turnover
margin. When Bo first came to NU that was the big difference in the
defense they became ball hawks. It didn't seem to happen this year, and
has probably cost us a least 2 games.
Laura
Other:
We're #2 in Punt Returns (13.9 yds/ret)
We're dead last in Turnover Margin (-1.67/gm), Penalties (62.5 yds/gm)
and
Penalties For (36.0 yds/gm) yet we've got a winning record.
