I have spent much of the morning watching a replay of the '71 OU/NU game from the link at HuskerPedia. I have never watched a replay of the game and my recollections were cloudy at best after 37 years.
Some observations:
The players look very small compared to today.
Jerry Tagge and Jeff Kinney were very good, better and more important than I had remembered.
Johnny Rogers run was for the first score. I had thought it was later in the game. Still amazing.
The screen looks so uncluttered compared to today's broadcasts. No score, clock, down, distance, timeout info, play clock, or scores and schedules crawling across the bottom. It is nice to see the game as a game.
At half-time they showed both marching bands. It had slipped my mind that they used to do that. No Holtz, May, or any of the other egos. No ESPN self-promotion.
It was nice to see a game that was not basketball on grass.
It was all in all a football experience--players, the game, cheerleaders, fans, the bands, and all the atmosphere. Much more of the spirit of the game with the broadcast adapted to the game rather than the game contorted into the broadcast that we see today.
Announcers were ok. I did not even mind Bud Wilkinson there. I used to dislike him on broadcasts. Guess I have mellowed and forgiven him for all the torment in my youth.
And NU won again, hehe.
