I was on the now defunct Men's Varsity Swimming Team in the early to mid
80's when Bob Devaney was the AD.
With all due respect to Bob's comment, "Under Bob Devaney's reign as AD
the Athletic Department was just the reverse. Most all the sports
programs were mediocre or not very good."
I can tell you that men's swimming, wrestling, track, men's gymnastics,
and volleyball did quite well. We dominated the Big-8. Wrestling (several
members to nationals and the Olympics), men's gymnastics (five national
championships), and volleyball were nationally ranked. The track and
field teams were very competative in the conference.
Granted, football is king. Those of us in the minor sports know that it
is football that provided for the rest of us. I am huge supporter of
Nebraska Football because without it I never would have been an three
year letterman at Nebraska; never would have placed as a walk on freshman
at the Big-8 Championships.
Go Big Red!
