***** Tony asked me this off list, but I thought I'd send it to everyone to
read. Hope you don't mind Tony *****

Weber's performance was surprising to me. He's been a little inconsistent
for my tastes, but yesterday he was stellar (7IP / 4H / 1ER / 2BB / 9K) so
we'll see how that spells out the rest of the year. To be fair he's had 3
straight quality starts (6+ ip, 3 or less ER), but his last start he allowed
5 Runs, only 3 earned. Granted, 2 unearned runs are hard to blame on a
pitcher, but he really ran into a brick wall.

If you would have asked me about the depth a month ago, I would have told
you it's going to be an adventurous year from the mound. I thought we'd be
average at best and our hitting was really going to have to come on to
really compete in the Big XII.

Now I'm kind of thinking the other way around. Our hitting has been decent,
but losing Tezak in the middle of the lineup really hurt.

It's still very early, but what Newman's done with this staff is nothing
short of remarkable. A great team ERA in college is 3.00 or even 3.50.
Right now we're at 2.82 which is fantastic. We're 2nd in the Big XII behind
aTm who's at 2.54 (Childress, dang we miss him), but I'd bet we're Top 20 in
the country (they haven't put out the numbers yet).

As far as a Big XII title? I still doubt it. There's some REALLY good
teams in the Big XII. I said at the beginning of the year (and I stand by
it) that if we win 35+ games Coach A deserves COY consideration. If you
consider that we lost six pitchers to the draft last year and we're 2nd in
the Big XII in pitching, WOW.

I like our chances any weekend with our pitching, but fact of the matter is
Missouri, Baylor and Texas are REALLY good. 7 out of the 10 teams in the
conference have 5 losses or less.

We play Oklahoma and Arkansas (Coach Van Horn) this week and that will be a
great gauge on how good this team really is. The only downside is we play
Arkansas in a midweek matchup, so we don't get to throw our best versus
their best which is too bad.

Skylar, What do you think of Weber's performance yesterday ? And do the
Huskers have the depth at pitcher to contend for the Big 12 Title.
