Yes, college students occasionally do stupid and illegal things, but
it's just not true to say: "There is no room for mistakes." and "These
guys might as well be hermits." Closer to the truth is that there is
room for mistakes, but the room doesn't extend to sexual assault,
failure to comply, and resisting arrest. Moreover, it is closer to the
truth to say they should avoid serious criminal behavior, than to say
they need to be hermits. And, it's not just because there is a new
coach --- I think almost any coach would have to suspend a player
arrested on these three pretty serious charges.
The facts of this case have not yet been heard in a court, but if the
allegations are true, it's well beyond typical stupid and illegal
behaviors of most college students, at least those with whom I engaged
in stupid and illegal behaviors.
All of that said, depending on the nature of the alleged assault and
the alleged resisting arrest, I wouldn't be surprised to see Christensen
work his way out of the charges (e.g., diversion) and back onto the team.
Much of that depends on the details of the events, his attitude toward
his actions, and any past criminal record.
