I agree with this. The Indy Irsays (still can't all them the Colts, though I
respect their coach a lot) threw away a regular season game and didn't even
try to win once they clinched their spot. That sort of seems like fraud for
a season ticket holder. There are payoffs in CF and they begin in September.
Every game is important. And yes, I like all the arguments that not having a
play off produces. Just because someone wins a structured playoff does not
mean they are the best team either. It might just be that West VA or USC is
the best team this year. The 1982-3 Huskers were probably the best team that
year. The whole season and the drama of missed calls (Penn State 1982!),
playing without injured starts adds to debate and interest. What I loved
about NU that one year (1994?) is that we won with the third string
quarterback and running plays in a game or two. This year's bowl games were
more interesting in some ways because there was no undefeated team and
people could more easily wonder how a West VA might have done against a USC
or LSU or Ohio State. I suppose that still can be done with a playoff but
each game seems more important now. I remember developing a greater interest
in other games back in the days when the whole thing was vote on. I suspect
the vote decided champions were as valid as the ones decided by a special
game. The more different games I watch to get a sense of whose might end up
being voted #1, the more football plays I witness and that makes for a great
day.
