Since sports other than football are being discussed, I will fill you in on
the women's basketball team.
Coach Connie Yori has a very young team consisting of 1 senior, 2 juniors,
5 sophomore's & 5 freshman.
Coach Yori is in her 6th year at Nebraska & this is really the first year
she has had the athletics & depth to run her
favored up-tempo offense & in your face full court pressing defense. She
does this by playing 10 players extensively
with constant rotation in & out to keep her players fresh & hopefully wear
down the opposing team.
The only senior is Danielle Page who is having a breakout year because she
is finally healthy. 'D' is only of the
premier shot blockers in the Big 12.
The juniors are Kelsey Griffin & Tay Hester. 'Mo' Griffin is a returning
all Big 12 player who is as tough as nails.
She is finally playing at all Big 12 level after cracking a rib suffered in
early November. Even with the cracked rib
she is leading the Big 12 in charges taken. Tay is very athletic JUCO
whose offense & decision making are starting to come after a shaky
start to the year.
Sophomores:
Vonnie Turner - lock down defender, seems to be clutch late game
shooter
Cory Montgomery - Coach Yori calls her best 6th women in Big 12
Kala Kuhlmann - makes few mistakes, good shooter
Nicole Neals - small (5'4"), good defender & 3-point shooter
Nikki Bober - small town Nebraska kid who I thought had no chance
last year, worked very hard last summer to lose weight
and get in great shape, understand her
role, good passer & rebounder. Is 6'4" which can't be coached
Freshman:
Dominique Kelley - starting point guard, great assist to turnover
ratio. Most mature heady freshman I have seen at Nebraska.
Kaitlyn Burke - childhood movie star, best three point shooter on
team, turning into 3-point assassin when team needs lift
Catherine Redmon - post project, most athletic big girl I have seen
at Nebraska. Will be a good one down the road
Jessica Periago - from France, 6'4" but skinny, can shoot 3-pointer,
project.
Monique Whittaker - project from Texas, haven't seen play enough to
comment on.
We may not compete for the Big 12 this year but we are in the upper echelon
of the league and only getting better & better because of the
youth gaining experience.
I will be glad to address any comments or questions.
