Certainly, the OSU game is important for the women's basketball
team. It appears that NU isn't ready to challenge for the league
championship, but the OSU game would put NU in a solid position
in the second tier. The game also will be important for the NCAA
seed (which NU has virtually assured).
However, the big winter sports success story has to be the
wrestling team. It probably is too much to hope for an NCAA
team title, but this team isn't that far away. If they get a
few key upsets, it's possible to imagine. I think the team would
be disappointed by anything less than a top-5 finish. And, the
team has just one senior (at heavyweight and is reputed to have
a good redshirt heavyweight ready to step in next year).
They finished second in the National Duals (knocking off #1 Penn
State, #6 Minnesota, and #9 Northwestern) to earn the #3 ranking,
then went to Oklahoma to knock off #2 OSU to earn the #2 ranking.
Next, NU's wrestling match with a stout Missouri team was highly
entertaining and competitive. Three matches went to overtime
and there was at least one upset that went in each team's
direction, but NU came away with a 22-13 win (the same margin
as the OSU dual).
