Cook's statement to the press should be considered in context. That
Cook doesn't criticize Rose in a press conference is hardly indicative
that Cook "doesn't have a problem" with Rose. If Cook thinks Rose is
a jerk, treated Yanz badly, or has personal animosity towards Nebraska,
Cook isn't the sort of man who would say so in a press conference.
What does he gain by doing so? It would just diminish his own
reputation.
When the clip you quote was played on one of the local TV stations,
the announcer said something to imply that he (the newscaster) was
just playing the tape and that it wasn't his place to suggest it was
sarcasm. By doing so, the announcer certainly suggested Cook might
have been speaking coach-speak rather than his opinion. It was my
impression that Cook laid it on more-than-a-bit thick with this quote
--- to the extent that I thought there was more to it (i.e., sarcasm,
but subtly so) than the words convey. Methinks Cook is such a class
act that he damns with excessive praise.
I don't get the impression that they are really "almost like best
buddies or brothers" even if Rose is a student and coaching alum of NU.
