To recycle an old 'Saturday Night Live' line, isn't he still dead?
BTW, shouldn't that have been Bobby Bowden, not Tommy? Tommy was forced
out at Clemson in October. (Bobby's still on the hot seat at FSU according
to some sources, though.)
The number of college football coaches who retire completely voluntarily
has always been very small. (Joe Tiller wasn't one of them.)
That number is likely to be even smaller as we go forward, as 25 year
tenure coaches have always been rare and are now an endangered species.
After JoePa and Bobby Bowden go, are there any left in Division 1 FBS?
Personally I hope that Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald, who just lost his
status as 'The youngest head coach in Division 1 football' when Tennessee
hired Lane Kiffen, makes it to 25 years in Evanston. He's made it quite
clear that he has his dream job, as he was a member of the 95 Rose Bowl team.
JoePa just got an extension through 2011. BTW, some sources had PSU
President Graham Spanier trying to throw his hat in the ring for a
position in the Obama administration, Secretary of Education. (Thankfully
he didn't get it.)
I wonder if that means JoePa will outlast yet another President of Penn
State?
