And this is exactly why I say that leaving the bowls out of the playoff picture wouldn't matter and why a playoff wouldn't hurt 99% of the bowl games. They could continue just as they are now.

I think that this last statement by Steve is probably the #1, #2, and
#3 reasons the folks at the Gator Bowl and the city of Jacksonville
will select Clemson. Doesn't have much to do with football, or
rankings, or even all that much about match-ups, and almost everything
about butts in seats. Clemson fans, according to a couple of the guys
from that area I heard on the radio yesterday afternoon, travel well,
probably as well as Nebraska fans. And of course, Nebraska fans will
travel. After all, its Florida, its warm, it even could be sunny for
most of the time, there are beaches nearby (though on the Atlantic),
and if Jacksonville isn't exciting enough for some folks, its only
about 2 hours to Orlando. Clemson will travel better than Florida
State because even if FSU gets fans to the game, they'll all go home
afterwards. Clemson fans will come early and stay late. And that's
what the bowl folks and the City want. Money. Moola. The fact that
it would be an entertaining game helps a bit, but like most bowls, its
only for bragging rights and they are essentially meaningless. And
so, if it ain't for the MNC, its only done for money.
