I guess I have to disagree a bit. While the suggestion has been made
that anyone with a pulse could have had multiple wins with the talent
Stoops had, I see several teams out there that had loads of talent
that did diddly this year. I think folks are overlooking the job that
Stoops did this year, even with the talent he had on the field. He
got that talent to perform at an incredible level, which isn't easy.
And he convinced that talent to come to Norman, Oklahoma to play
football. Heck, we want to give Mack Brown tons of accolades because
he took a team that wasn't expected to do well to a one loss season.
But we've always considered Texas to be loaded, and they weren't
suffering a lack of talent this year, so what is the difference
between these two coaches that seem to be making the most of their
situations?
Pelini did an outstanding job this year in refocusing and motivating
the Huskers. Some poo-poo'd the early suggestions for a 8 win season,
but we now know that it could have been (should have been) a 9 win
season. But we still only won the ones we were supposed to win, and
lost the ones were were supposed to lose. Coaching shows when you can
win the ones you aren't supposed to win, and beat the snot out of the
teams you're supposed to beat. Or at least that seems to be the
measuring stick for getting the Coach of the Year honors. I think
Pelini should get a honorable mention this year, but he needs to move
the Huskers beyond what we did this year to the point where the South
teams tremble rather than lick their lips when they see us on their
schedule. That's when I see him as Coach of the Year.
