Can you provide me with TO's documented exact words? Did he use
the word "crucial" or is that your word? I need more than just you
saying he said certain things. No one is arguing TO got some quality
players from the walk on program least of all me. No one is saying the
walk on program hasn't contributed and I can see where TO would like
that. But, some around here are acting like if the walk on program
wouldn't exist there would be absolutely no reason for NU to field a
team. So, IF TO did indeed use the word crucial we can assume without
the walk on program NU would have never known the success it has in
football and would have never been a national power. I find that to be
a big time stretch.
Here is a quote which is very different than what you are
presenting. The website is listed below the quote:
"I did have the opportunity to talk with Tom Osborne on one occasion and
this is one of the questions I asked of him. What is the strength in
Nebraska's walk-on program? Tom said every once in a while a talented
player will emerge, one that we over looked and make a big impact for
us. But for the most part, these walk-on players bring a lot of Nebraska
heart and soul to the recruits we bring in from out of state. Their work
ethic is hard and they give 110% every practice. That effort and work
ethic is transfered to the recruited players. Tom said the walk-ons (for
the most part) do more behind the scenes than than actually on the field."

This is more the way I see the walk on program than "crucial". It
would seem TO feels the big contribution would be on the practice field
and in the locker room than during a game.

I didn't say it never has happened. That is one year. As you
say, that doesn't parse. Is there another year in TO's tenure that we
have six walk ons starting? Other than that one year did we average two
starters a year from the walk on program.

I think you know what I meant. You are just nitpicking now. If
you want me to explain it then I will but it has something to do with
less scholarships allowed today per institution than during the Osborne
tenure.
