[Husker] Good News for Joba - For Now?

After his examination today Dr. Andrews apparently informed the Yankees
that Joba's problem is tendinitis in his rotator cuff and that he
doesn't anticipate any long term effects - at this time.

Even still the Yankees have placed Joba on the 15-day DL and are
shutting him down completely for at least a week - at which time he will
be re-evaluated and hopefully begin a throwing regiment.

I would be highly surprised if, even in the heat of a pennant race that
the Yankees are definitely in, that they will do anything but take their
absolute time and care with Joba. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if
they don't shut him down for the rest of the season.

Yankee fans will note that Jorge Posada also went on the DL earlier this
season with rotator cuff tendinitis - only to later have labrum surgery.

Let's hope for Joba's sake that this isn't a repeat of Francisco
Liriano's situation in 2006. During that season he left a game with
elbow soreness, was evaluated, rested for a couple of weeks only to come
back and throw 1 or 2 more innings before having Tommy John surgery. He
has now just returned to the big leagues (besides a botched 3-game call
up in April) after almost 2 years.

FYI.

Jeff
