This Spring Game thing has really blown into something big.
I guess it is a good thing for those that enjoy it. The one thing I
noticed is it almost seems like the fans and media are treating it
like a regular game against another school. The spring game
typically is not even close to that. First of all it is NOT a game.
It is a scrimmage in practice. Unlesss it is different this year
uaually there are an amount of players that end up playing for
each team. B. Pelini/Watson/C. Pelini are not going to empty
their play books. The reason is obvious. Out of the 80,000 or
so fans it would be pretty easy for a couple of hundred of them
to be scouts from other teams.
As far as talent evaluation I have never put too much
emphasis on the spring game. Just because a player has a great
spring game doesn't translate into a great fall campaign nor does
it necessarily go vice versa.
It seems it is a social event more than anything. It is an
excuse for Husker fans to get together and party around a
"football game". Nothing wrong with that. To be honest I am
much more interested in the NU-KU baseball game this
afternoon than I am the spring game.
