I think making any predictions on this year's spring
game on the basis of what happened last year is likely
futile. I'll give you a couple of stats to chew on.
Defensive Scoring:
September: 133 points allowed in 5 games; 26.6
average
November: 172 points allowed in 3 games; 57.3 average
Did the defense somehow become less talented during
the season? Less experienced? Highly unlikely.
Was it something else? I'd argue yes.
The program has seen some significant changes. All
new coaches on defense. By all accounts, players are
have lost weight and gained speed, quickness, and
agility. Is the mental outlook better? That we don't
know, and probably won't know until October at the
earliest. But judging from what I observed last
October and November, it probably would be a good
bet.
What does this mean? I'm expecting different from
last year, so I'm suggesting that we throw away last
year's results as any sort of starting point.
Factor in a new way of assembling the teams, and I'm
not sure that points really matter in this game. I'm
looking more for execution. Are players "making
plays" or "making mistakes". Are players hustling?
What is the effort like?
