Ones vs Ones?
"It seems like everybody's obsessed with that," Pelini said. "We're going to
split the teams equally, is what we're doing to do. We're going to have a
red team and a white team and not worry about 1s on 1s or 2s on 2s. We're
going to watch our guys play football and get better as a group. ... It's
going to be more split down the middle, kind of a draft-type thing."
- Bo Pelini
I like the idea of 1s on 1s because you get a better idea of what you are
looking at, good players on good players, higher competition. It makes for
a more competitive ball game as well but it does add to the risk of injury.
I hadn't really thought about this draft concept but I like the idea of it.
It will be fun for the players and coaches if any of us have ever played
shirts vs skins in the backyard (just don't pick me last). It should be a
highly competitive ball game so the fans get what they want. I suspect
there will be big plays on both sides of the ball. I never know how to
interpret those in a spring game? Do I cheer for the 50 yard TD run or cry
in disgust at the lack of tackling? Do I cheer for the play on the ball and
interception for the defense or criticize Ganz for throwing that ball in the
first place?
Given your two deep will play most of the snaps in any game, I suspect we'll
see a mixture of 1 on 1 on a few matchups with 1 on 2 in others with 2 on 3
mixed in all playing at the same time. Coaches get paid to evaluate that
stuff. In fact, the coaches may not know who those are right now so this is
probably a good way to find out what the depth chart may look like. Maybe
this will give us the best look at overall depth and talent on the team?
