To 'spare' the football-only readers any un-necessary hardship, please
delete now.
Nebraska Women's Bowling set to challenge for yet another National
Championship on April 10, 11 & 12 in Omaha, Nebraska. The Championship
match will be shown LIVE on ESPNU on April 12th at 700pm CST.
Coach Bill Straub has been with the program for many, many years. He may
have been originally "recruited" as the coach by Moses --- in the era before
Devaney. I am not sure.
Anyway, along with their numerous national titles, Straub's squads have not
been ranked lower than seventh in the top 25 bowling poll since becoming a
varsity sport in 1997.
The "numerous national titles" came in '91, '95, '97, '99, '01, '04 and '05.
Five titles came under the IBC umbrella while the back2back titles came
under the NCAA umbrella.
Nebraska is currently ranked #1 with Maryland, Vanderbilt, Sacred Heart and
Central Missouri rounding out the Top 5.
The eight teams that have qualified for the championship bracket include:
* Arkansas State University
* University of Central Missouri
* University of Maryland, Eastern Shore
* Minnesota State University, Mankato
* University of Nebraska, Lincoln
* New Jersey City University
* Sacred Heart University
* Vanderbilt University - defending champions
Here's wishing the ladies a strikingly successful tournament at Thunder
Alley!
Some ladies from my neck of the woods (an apparent hot-bed of women's
bowling) have been recruited by Nebraska but are currently on the Central
Missouri squad. They come from the Harlem High School. In a related
note, the Big Red has recruited a local high school lady from Rockford, Ms
Jordan Haverly, for her Volleyball prowess.
Go Big Red!

The thread about "orphan sports" got me thinking about what I would
truly like to have this list do is keep me up to date on all of them. I
think it would be wonderful if an entusiastic list member would "adopt"
and orphan sport (almost anything but football) and do regular updates
during the season that give us the highlights of what is going on with
the team.
I no longer live in NE and I don't have the time to check out all the
different websites for the different sports so if someone with an
interest and partial understanding of the sport could keep me up on what
is happening I would be gratful. Maybe the start of the subject line
could be the sport being updated so those that had no interest could
easily ignor the posts.
What do the rest of you think?
Laura
