I have very mixed reactions to this statement.  I agree completely with the
statement, "If football was winning the conference and a few NCs he'd still
be here".  Regardless of everything else, I believe that's true 110%.

What I don't agree with is the idea that because football went bad he had to
go.  I think it was the combination of the fact that he was....shall we say,
divisive AND the fact that football went down the crapper that he was let go
(changing the way something has been done for 30+ years is ALWAYS going to
be divisive).   If he had been a publicly heralded guy I think he would have
been given a chance to replace the coaching staff he had put in place and
'try again' so to speak.

I don't think he was good for the University, but if he had been more
popular and had done more to maintain what we like to call, "The Nebraska
Way" then I think he would have survived the BC debacle.

Do you agree with that?
