[Husker] Sadler gets contract extension

Actually, Bo Pelini was an "honorary" coach and sat on
the bench for a match against Oklahoma in February.

(Pelini's also been spotted at Husker baseball games;
apparently catching a foul ball a couple of weeks
ago.)

As for Pederson's handling of Collier, Mike DeCoursey
of the Sporting News said in 2006 that it didn't make
any sense. Collier had two years left on his
contract, but Pederson neither fired him nor extended
the contract. That left Collier in a state of limbo.
He had trouble recruiting as other coaches pointed out
to kids that Pederson wasn't committed to Collier.
The handwriting was on the wall for Collier that his
time was up in 2008, but Pederson didn't have the guts
(or the money) to buy out Collier. So he put Husker
basketball on a hunger strike, trying to starve out
Collier. Assistant coach and ace recruiter Scott
Spinelli bailed out and went to Wichita State.
Another assistant went to be a head coach in D-2.
Collier started applying for other jobs, but didn't
get the Butler AD job until the summertime.

Some might consider that a shrewd move by Pederson to
get Collier to leave without buying him out. But that
cost Nebraska basketball a lot of time and a season of
recruiting. And if Collier had called Pederson's
bluff on this, Collier's contract would have just
expired. Can you imagine what Husker basketball would
look like with two years of a head coach who everybody
knew was going to be out of a job in March 2008?

Pederson deserves a lot of credit for hiring Doc
Sadler. His handling of Barry Collier left a lot to
be desired.
