I'm not sure about college football and assistant coaches, but I believe
there may have been professional sports teams where the team owner fired
the manager mid-game.
Joe Garagiola once wrote that the baseball season wasn't really underway
until George Steinbrenner threw out the first manager. (I don't think
George ever fired a manager mid-game, but I suspect he THOUGHT about it!)
When Bill Veeck owned the White Sox, they once had a game where the fans
in one section 'managed' the team, making group decisions using flashcards
as to whether to steal, change the pitcher, etc. The Sox even won that
game, as I recall.
