I often wondered that myself.  Why call it a contract at all since neither
party is required to keep it.

Why not just call it a date range specific compensation plan. :)

Ironically, if I'm a HC replacing a guy who went 9-3 and got fired, I'd want
a pretty good settlement dollar in case I have a decent year and get canned
anyway.  (This is not a 'Solich should have been fired' statement, just what
I would think in that position).
