About the only time a coach makes such a drastic move like that mid-season 
is when he's concerned about his own neck being on the chopping block 
before the end of the season.  Among other things, it leaves the school 
a coach short during a key part of the recruiting season, because they 
aren't likely to add someone to the coaching staff mid-season (and anyone 
they find probably has to be unemployed at the moment, so the pickings 
are likely to be slim.)

BC's job is secure for a few years because his boss and his boss's
boss aren't about to admit that they might not have made the right 
decisions a few years ago or that they made some promises (regarding 
competing for national championships, etc) that they aren't even close to
meeting at this point, so I wouldn't expect any desperation measures 
from BC.
