I don't know if in the 40 plus years I have watched Husker football this is the worst defense or not but it ranks right down there. I am usually the last one to come down on a coach because I know it can be a fickle position. You are great if you win and a bum if you lose. There is really no in between. And, there may be little difference in the way you coached wither way. I also have learned coaching is not like playing a video game where you hold a controller in your hand and as long as you push the right buttons you will win. I remember when people wanted TO out of town then in the 90's he walked on water. I remember watching him walk into the Devaney Center for the celebration after his first National Title. He lead the team in and the place went nuts. The camera zoomed in on Tom and he was looking from here to there into the crowd. I have no idea what he was thinking but it was almost like, "yeah, you guys stand and cheer now but I also wonder how many of you that are cheering now wanted me gone a few years ago?"
With that said it would appear Cosgrove just flat isn't getting it done. If things aren't right for a few games or maybe even a season one might say there are other reasons than coaching. But, as you said, Cosgrove has had time. This defense isn't just having a few off games. It is bad. He won't get replaced before the end of the season. That rarely happens in college football unless Cosgrove himself decides to step aside. When and if it happens will be problematical. People usually don't like firing good friends.
To me the offense is better than the defense but it isn't great either in my opinion. We put up good numbers against Nevada and Ball State. However, if we are as good as we would like to think we are we better put up numbers against those kind of teams. When we go against the likes of USC and Wake Forest the offense doesn't look all that formidable.
