I heard from a well-placed source that Pederson's first choice was
Wannstedt (another ousted pro coach). The story I heard was that
Wannstedt had indicated his interest, but then changed his mind and
left Pederson somewhat scrambling to replace Solich. There was some
speculation that the perceived opportunity to hire Wannstedt may
have figured into Pederson's actions.
This year Pitt is 2-1, with wins over E. Michigan and Gram St and a
loss to Michigan State. Last year, they finished 6-6 with five losses
to end the season. In 2005, they finished 5-6. So, Wannstedt has a
13-13 record at Pitt and the prospects aren't great this year.
I'd rather have Callahan than Wannstedt or Nutt.
