I cringe every time I hear that a backup QB will be starting. I can still
remember...back in 1988 ...when OU's QB, Jamelle Holieway, got hurt and was
replaced by Charles Thompson a couple of weeks before playing Nebraska.
Prior to the NU-OU game, one of the TV stations had Tom Osborne and Barry
Switzer on at the same time. Barry commented that ... to be fair...
Nebraska should go with their 2nd string QB, since OU was going with theirs.
Dr. Tom was obviously flustered (Barry Switzer had that effect on him many
times), and mumbled something about Thompson being a pretty good
replacement. As we all know, #2 OU upset the #1 Huskers in the Game of the
Century II. Charles Thompson dominated that game.
Since that time, I hate to hear that a backup will be starting for the
opponent.
