The Nevada game afforded the team a chance to do something that hasn't
happened too much in the past - get playing time for the 2nd / 3rd
string players. It was like the "good old days" out there in getting a
chance to see some of the upcoming players. This has to help down the
road in building up depth as well as the coach's confidence in the
backups. I still can't get over how last year when Mann got sick Byford
came in and never sat the rest of the season, even after Mann was
healthy enough to play. How can a coaching staff not give any playing
time to the better player as Byford obviously was? I read a Byford
interview this fall and he said his goal for last year was to get a
couple snaps in for the year. Given how some of the backups got a chance
against Nevada, maybe they'll have a better chance to play more this
year.
