I had the same thought, but I would imagine that the standard "hail 
mary" play is run a lot more often than the "schoolyard lateral."  In 
fact, I think it's a no brainer to go with a standard "hail mary" if 
you're within 60 yards of the endzone.  If you go much farther than 
that, a team might be better off going with the laterals depending on 
how strong of an arm their QB has.  It seems like this is the way many 
coaches are thinking, at least if their playcalling is any indication.
