I'm serious about answering that sober question: "You, me, us fans,
and most of all the media."

These young men are literate and intelligent students. Many of them
have family or relatives lurking on this List, and they all read the
local papers either online or on paper. About half the posts to the
HuskerList involve monetary and financial discussion concerning the
university, the athletic department, and the coaching staff. They
watch "sports" programs on television and hear "sports" programs on
the radio, most of which involve speculation about contracts, costs,
profits, losses, and the like.

These players couldn't possibly avoid becoming money-conscious in the
current situation because we may well be money-grubbingest society on
the planet. So we have come to the point where we know the price of
everything but the value of hardly anything.

As Pogo said, "I have seen the enemy, and they is us."
