I was asked:
>You've probably seen quite a bit of Rutgers coach Greg Schiano. How well do
>you think he would fit in as a Nebraska head coach? Hypothetically. Just in
>case a position were to open up here someday?
What Schiano has done is make a long-term commitment to bring a perenial BigEast doormat into "big-time college football", which he has done. the entire state of NJ is Rutgers fans, now. He is obviously a gifted recruiter - you can't watch a game or read a story in the paper without a discussion of how he has gotten New Jersey kids to stay home and play for him. His uses his ties to Miami to recruit strongly in south Fla as well.
As far as coaching, he seems to be the kind of coach who gets the players to play at (or beyond) their potential. this team will run thru walls for him and for the team. He was able to get Brian Leonard to stay for his senior year. He certainly concentrates on the defense. He doesn't hide his emotions - he gets very excited when RU wins; he screams at the refs when he thinks he's gotten a bad call. I'm not knowledgable enough to know whether he's good at making "half-time adjustments", but the team looked good beating South FL last week, and suffered a tough loss at WV today.
After RU went to (and won) their first bowl game in school history last year, he probably could have been elected governor, if he wanted. the rumors of him being lured away to another school were rampant last year, and he made it clear he was staying. obviously, that doesna't mean he would never leave, but he's made a commitment to RU, and even the people of NJ who think that RU has destroyed itself by commiting to "big-time football" are impressed by his personality, his commitment, his work ethic. he handles the press well; he doesn't waffle, he apparently handles the RU administration well. he handles the "why is Rutgers cutting small sports (they have), raising tuition (they have), cutting the budget of academic departments (they have), while giving the football coach a raise (they have) ?" type of comments
As well as RU is doing, I don't think that they are (yet?) in the category of a LSU, USC, Oklahoma, Michigan, etc; could he really make it in Lincoln?
just my opinion,
Glen in NJ
ps *very* tough, very painful loss today. I was able to listen to the first half today before having to leave for the airport for a business trip. a three-touchdown dog, winning at half time against TX *in Austin*. made me proud.
