This article has the revealing reality of the 2005 recruiting class as the
most aggravating
part of the Callahan legacy to me. I realize that nine transfers could
happen but that seems rather high. Also, the story on Danny Muy at the time
of his transfer was that he
chose to go to Florida International to be closer to family. Was that just a
nice way of saying that he had no desire to continue playing for Callahan &
Company?
I can honestly say that I am not enjoying being caught up in the soap opera
swirling about the Husker Football Program right now. There hasn't been this
degree of uncertainty since we were getting a play-by-play of Houston Nutt
boarding or not boarding the plane waiting on the Fayetteville Airport
runway to whisk him off to a new job in Lincoln while he negotiated a pay
raise and contract extension from Arkansas.
The sun keeps coming up in the east and going down in the west even if the
Cornhuskers lose the next four games by a combined 120-12 margin or if they
sweep the next four and take a bowl game victory to preserve the Callahan
Contingent in Lincoln. Our vaunted tradition and stability is after all
something that had to change in order to avoid the slide into mediocrity.
The moves to change those things did avoid the slide but precipitated a free
fall right past mediocrity into near oblivion.
That is my opinion from nearly Nebraska in North Central Kansas where I will
cheer for the Round Mound of Sound in Lawrence but reject all blandishments
to find anything good about the Manhattan Mildcats.........
