I can. Suppose you're one of the people interested in the position of
AD at Nebraska. With due diligence and such, it's unlikely you're going
to be on the job before some time in mid January if not later than that.
Have they even advertised the position yet?

Now, would you like what may well be the single biggest decision during the
next several years to be made for you before you take office?

That's probably how SP felt, I'm sure, though I suspect there was no love
lost between him and Frank Solich anyway. I suspect to some extent Bill
Byrne felt the same way, that he had been boxed in by Osborne and Devaney
when they named Solich the 'Assistant Head Coach'. (Only an annointing
with oil could have made it much more official.)

Firing the football coach at 5PM on Nov 23rd (or within the next few
days/weeks) and then waiting for the new AD to hire his replacement would
leave a BIG void during a key recruiting time frame. You only THINK the
recruits are nervous now!

Even if SP took forever to fumble his way towards hiring BC, having
such a lengthy process again is not a good idea.

And with due diligence it's unlikely the new AD would be able to hire
a replacement for BC within a few days of taking office, either. So,
the choices appear to be having Osborne hire the next coach, being without
a head coach during the several weeks leading up to the signing date or
going another year with BC.

Who knows, maybe BC can right the ship, Frank Solich did (and then got
canned anyway.)

IMHO, what it will really come down to is whether Osborne plans to be
in office less than a month or two or whether he plans to be there 2-4
years (as some of the early rumors had it.)

If the latter, then I think we're a bit more likely to see some kind of
definitive action regarding BC in late November or early December.
