Uh...why? Callahan's record at Nebraska is curently 26-19 (.577 winning
percentage). If NU loses the next 4 games, which is likely, he would
have a 26-23 career record. 3 of those wins came against 1-AA teams,
which would make him 23-23 against 1-A competition. A .500 record
against 1-A teams over a 4-year span is not acceptable. Even if I act
overly generous, and assume that NU wins 2 of the last 4 games, his
record against 1-A teams would "improve" to 25-21. That is still not
acceptab.
As far as rankings are concerned, Nebraska has finished the season in
the top 25 *once* under Callahan, at #24 after the 2005 season. The
previous coach (who got fired after 1 bad season and one average season)
finished in the top 20 for 5 out of 6 seasons, and in the top 10 for 3
out of 6 seasons.
The past 3 games have shown that the problems with this team go much
deeper than Cosgrove. The vaunted West Coast offense has managed only
34 points in the past 3 games against *bad* defenses. NU is currently
ranked 63rd in scoring offense. Outside of special teams/kicking, this
is a horrible team all-around.
As if this wasn't enough, consider the following:
* We have reports of Callahan mocking one of the most important men in
the history of the program
* He refuses to accept responsibility or even admit that there is a
problem (i.e. "I know I'm doing an excellent job")
* It appears that he has lost most of the players on his team, just like
Oakland in 2003. I can think of no other way to describe what has
transpired in the past 3 games.
He can't be gone soon enough.
