Which was a valid reason because of the system they had at the time, and to 
a large extent still have thanks to the AP.  Osborne certainly got his
share of sympathy votes in 1997/8.

Let's face it, nobody remembers who finishes #2 in the final polls, and
they don't hand out rings for it, either.
