Just returned from my annual game trip, this year to the A&M game. Friday night hooked up with the boys from Omaha Central class of '74 and had a few pops. Saturday headed down to Lincoln for the game. Incredible weather, almost too warm, but beautiful. Spent the morning in the Haymarket area, Husker Nation was turned out in force. Followed the band to the stadium, it was great. First thing I see as I get in the stadium is Tom Osborne talking to Bill Byrne in a corner of the endzone. After they were done, Tom and Nancy walked along the back of the endzone to the exit in the other corner. As they passed, they crowd would rise to their feet with an ovation. By the time they got to the other corner, the entire East stadium was standing and cheering. It was great.
The game - First half was OK. We were only losing by 2 at half. Defense had some plays, a rare sack on a blitz. Haven't seen that much this year and it was like seeing an old friend. Also, once we lined up in the I on short yardage and the I-back followed the fullback through for a first down. Very nice. Keller sucked less in the first half than usual so all in all, there was still optimism at half. Second half not so much. Keller returned to form and the defensive line got pushed around. Contrary to reports, the crowd began noticeably heading for the exits at about 10 minutes left and by 8 minutes it was in full force. At 0:00, the stands were slightly more than half full.
Best T-shirt: GOT TOM!
Best quote after the game: Dennis Franchione - "If they have no answer for it, we'll run it 'til their noses bleed." Talking about the QB inside running game...and that's just what they did.
Best quote the week before the game. Bill Callahan - "I know in my heart of hearts that I'm doing a good job, an excellent job." George Bush couldn't have said it any better.
Note to Cosgrove: If you can't stop the opponents inside running game, then what you CAN stop is irrelevant. The D-line got very little help most of the time.
Val's after the game. The weekend was all good except for the quality of our football on the field.
But we all know what the silver lining is!!!!!
