Dr. Tom said on ESPN Radio yesterday that he hopes to
work himself out of a job. He didn't estimate how
long that would take.

I think a few things are crystal clear about the
Interim AD situation:

1. T.O. doesn't have a lot of answers right now.

2. T.O. took the Interim position to bring some
stability to the program.

3. T.O. Doesn't know for sure what will become of the
current football coaching staff after this year is
complete.

4. T.O. will attempt to bring some people back into
the program who have previously been involved with the
football program who have been dis-enfranchised for
whatever reason.

5. T.O. has full authority in the Athletic Department
and is only obligated to keep HP informed, and stay
within the budget unless prior approval to exceed the
budget is given.

6. T.O will be available to assist BC and his staff
in any way they see fit. They will have to ask though
because T.O. will not micro-manage.

7. The next 5 games are critical in regards to the
fate of the current coaching staff.

I get the feeling from listening to T.O.'s own words
that he has made few if any permament decisions yet.
T.O.'s use of the word dis-enfranchised was quite
interesting and refreshing to hear that kind of
honesty.

I'm sure several of you Lister's heard Steve Taylor
describe his facilities tour led by BC. Taylor said
several times that the pictures were gone. Pictures
of previous great players that were positioned
strategically throughout the football complex when
Taylor was a member of the team.

Taylor said the pictures were important to him and
other players because it was a constant reminder of
greatness, and was a constant motivator to achieve
excellence.

Does anyone know if the pictures Taylor was describing
are still there? Have they been moved? Any reason
anyone knows of?

Todd in Tennessee

I am not sure what Steve Taylor is talking about.

All of the photos, awards, etc. still adorn the hallway in West Stadium
that connects the Osborne Complex to the Hewitt Center and training
table. So all of that is still there and in place.

In the West Stadium lobby, all of the display cases and the MNC trophies
are all still there as well.

In the Osborne Complex, the Football Player's Lounge is lined with
pictures of all the current Huskers playing in the NFL. It was actually
quite impressive to me to walk in and see the photos of all of the
former players that are NFL guys.

I have been in every area of the Osborne Complex and am there in general
quite often and I am not sure exactly what Steve Taylor was talking
about. At least to me it seems that most, if not all of that stuff is
still in place.

Oh what the heck. I think that after TO finds a permanent AD he should
fire Callahan and then hire himself as head coach. :)

One thing I remember hearing is there used to be a picture of Solich up
next to Bob and Tom somewhere in the stadium. Supposedly, this was
removed after Frank was fired, as if Solich never existed. Anyone
know/remember the details of this or am I going crazy?

Osborne turned 70 on Feb 23rd.

> 3. Would a young coach really want to come to Nebraska and coach in
> the shadow of a legend? Again my guess is probably not.

The presence of Darrell Royal never seemed to cause problems at Texas
with hiring some high profile coaches, young or otherwise. Also, keep
in mind that Osborne had Devaney as his AD for most of his career, and
Devaney knew a few things about football, so he's been on the other end
of that.

I see Osborne's 'interim' job as two fold:

1. Getting rid of the 'culture of fear' that had become pervasive at
the Athletic Department. Perlman said that he asked the Athletic
Department staff for comments about Pederson last summer and got
only two, one positive and one negative. Actually, I was surprised
he got that many. I suspect there were many staff members who
didn't reply at all because of concerns that SP would have found out.
IMHO, if Perlman has a flaw, it is probably that he is too isolated in
the chancellor's suite, as were most of his predecessors. People only
tell the 'boss' what they think he wants to hear, whether that's the
Chancellor at UNL or the President of the United States. A second
problem is that UNL has been and continues to be a very male-dominated
institution, so any comments that might have come from women staffers
might have been ignored anyway, and I'm sure those staffers knew that.

2. Mending fences with boosters, including Dan Cook.

Doing those will be a full time job. There are people around to take care
of most of the business details, though Osborne is a far better negotiator
than most people give him credit for.

Along the way I suspect he'll be heavily involved in the search for a
permanent AD.

Actually that would not surprise me at all. When I read the article by
Elizabeth Merrill on ESPN's web page this morning, I was struck by the
last paragraph, with a comment by TO's wife Nancy- "He has high energy.
I've always said he's going to die with his boots on. So maybe it will
be as athletic director. Maybe there's something else."

Something else? ;-)

I heard from more than one source that the words 'Frank' and 'Solich'
were not to be mentioned in the building. Mentioning He Who Shall Not
Be Named was rumored to be fatal to the clerical staff.

I suspect if you looked at a staff directory from the day before SP was
hired and looked at one from the day before he was fired, you'd find
very few names on both lists.

How big the overall athletic department staff?

That's the impression I always got, and it's a shame. Whether you liked
him as a head coach or not, Solich was a key part of Osborne's staff and
was far from the disaster at head coach that so many like to believe.
I'm not gonna "live in the past" so that's all I will say. I look
forward to Dr. Tom rebuilding many of the bridges that were burned by
the new "he who shall not be named." Speaking of which, has Paul Meyers
mentioned anything about coming back? I've heard some interesting
rumors on the "final straw" that made him leave...

In blunt terms, Frank Solich did a Hell of a lot more for NU than
Steve Pederson ever did.
