I'll add a few others reflecting on Pederson.
There are accounts that before Solich was fired, Pederson basically
cut-off direct communications with Solich, even reportedly slipping
notes under the door to avoid direct communications. When you think
you don't need to communicate with employees who are on your "team",
it's arrogance.
He left both Gill and Pelini feeling mistreated after Solich was fired.
Pelini also said that Pederson basically cut off communications. The
use them, mislead them, and lose them treatment demonstrates an ego
centric view.
His department has a reputation for attempting to supress and punish
criticism, e.g., from the press (e.g., at NET).
He's had several assistants leave, with comments indicating that not
all was well. (See the point before about their fairly circumspect
comments.)
He has left former athletes feeling alienated. Here's a part of the
LJS's Brian Chrisopherson's interview with Dale Jensen after the OSU
game:
Jensen said he knows of many people in Nebraska's N Club, made up of
former Husker letterwinners, who "feel alienated" from the current
program. This started soon after Pederson arrived as AD, he said.
"I'm not going to name names, but trust me, these are people with
household names and they are incredibly upset," Jensen said.
"It's one thing when the program is going through a down time, but when
you feel betrayed, you were loyal all these years, and these guys are N
Club members feeling that. There's too many of them for somebody to
just dismiss it."
I dug out this quote from Scott Frost from two years ago:
"Steve Pedersen brought that on himself when he was so cavalier in making
these tough decisions...I love Nebraska football. I love the state of
Nebraska. I long for the days when the characteristics of the team we put
on the field on Saturdays exemplified the characteristics of the hard
working people of our state. We used to have the Taj Mahal of college
football programs. Now it feels like someone took 40 tons of dynamite to
our proud and noble masterpiece and built a three bedroom ranch in its
place."
With so many problems with so many people that have Pederson at the
center, it's hard to come to conclude that he isn't the problem.
