As someone who has been critical, I'm not too far from agreeing with
you. Replacing coaches can be disruptive and counter-productive.
On the defensive side, I think we've got average coaches who are
struggling with a new D line and a cascade of events. I think they can
improve things (e.g., they played pretty good D against OU in KC last
year), but I don't think they will ever have an excellent defense, so
I think changes clearly are needed. On Callahan, I think the most
important thing is that he is learning and improving as a coach. It's
his first college head coaching position and he's bound to have a
learning curve, as both Osborne and Solich did. So, I'm not going to
be upset if he is kept as head coach for next year as long as he has an
improvement plan that is more substantial than what he gives in
comments to the press. That said, I am worried about two things:
that the team isn't playing sound football in very many areas (although
aspects of the kicking game have improved and pass blocking has been
pretty effective) and that he hasn't really shown the ability to
change things. In my mind, the most important change is to replace
Pederson, because someone's got to be directly involved in what is
done with the coaching and he's not the guy. First, let's get someone
in who is respected and knowledgable to oversee what happens next.
