You indeed remembered right.

That would be incorrect.  Lou Holtz was not only one of the finest
coaches ever to work in college football, his personal integrity and character is
beyond question for anyone who knows anything about it. He is in every
aspect the equal of Tom Osborne, and to say or insinuate otherwise is to display
monumental ignorance and classless character assassination.
