Is it even possible (as I fear it might be) that Pederson will
be left in a position to muck around in the mess he has made?
If he had any integrity he would resign, stating that the current
situation is unacceptable, admit his responsibility, and resign.

Of course, he has no integrity and I'm not sure that our
administration will replace him with someone who does.
